Adult Religious Education Courses for Fall 2010
“From Aging to Saging”, An eight-session UU curriculum written for the book by that same name by Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi. This is an investigation of the process of maturing into wisdom that we can all engage in as we age. Classes will take place at BVUUF in the Sanctuary on Fridays from 10 to 11:30 a.m., Sept 17, Oct 1, 15 and 29, Nov 5 and 12, Dec 10 and 17. Let the office know if you are interested in being a teaching assistant for Rev. Lydia; TAs’ course fees are waived.
In January (2011) Rev Lydia will begin a 12 month in-depth study of an aspect of living UU values. This class will meet one time a month; there will be readings, discussion with others and thoughtful consideration of ideas in relationship to oneself. Stay tuned for a specific topic and more information about this class.
“Half the Sky”, a class based on a book of the same title; this is a three-session class which takes its lead from the Chinese proverb, “Women hold up half the sky”. The oppression of women and girls in the developing world is our era’s most pervasive human rights violation. Pulitzer Prize authors Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl Wu Dunn present stories of extraordinary women facing seemingly insurmountable odds. Descriptive, pragmatic and yet inspirational, we learn how the world can be changed one woman at a time. Classes on Thursdays, Sept 9, 16, 23 at BVUUF from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Barnum room. Bring your dinner with you if you do not have time to eat at home or are coming to the class from work. Facilitated by Sue Middleton.
“A Study of Humanism”, What is it and how does it inform our UU beliefs? The class is led by Dave Leonard. Back by popular demand — this is a renewed, reformed and better-than-ever class that will be held 6-7:30 p.m. in Longmont at the home of Deb and Doug Schmidt on Wednesdays, Sept 29, Oct 13 and 27, Nov 10, Dec 1 and 8 (a change of date). Books are “good without god” by GM Epstein and “Reason and Reverence” by Murry. (As of this writing there were 6 of the Murry books available through the BVUUF office.) Thanks to the Schmidts for hosting these meetings.
This class will be an ongoing service project. Do you know how to knit or crochet, or do you want to learn? Ginny Baksa will lead a group who will knit or crochet (or any other fiber craft you want to do) lap blankets and comfort shawls for our members, friends and active visitors who are in a hospital, rehab facility, or nursing home as a reminder to them that the congregation is thinking of them. Will meet 10 a.m.-noon at BVUUF on Tuesdays starting Sept 28 in the Pauling room. No class fee for this class.
A reading/discussion group based in the book, “Soul Work”, dialogues of UU writers and leaders about anti-racism. This class is open to all, even if you did not attend the anti-racism class last semester lead by Dara Kaufman-LeDonne. The class will meet at night in Longmont on Thursdays 6:30-8p.m. in Longmont at the home of Elena Slusser and Jean Cannella on Sept 16, 23, 30 and Oct 7, 14, 21.
“The Transformational Power of Forgiveness” will be offered by Sam Hay and Theresa Lee in the evening at BVUUF around the Jewish high holy days of Rosh Hashonna and Yom Kippur. This class will include viewing and discussing the movie, “The Power of Forgiveness”, readings and discussions from psychologists and spiritual leaders about forgiveness, a group and individual exploration of forgiveness in one’s own life. Four to six sessions for this class.
There will be in-person registration at the front of the sanctuary after the 10 AM service on August 29 and Sept 5 and between the 9a.m. and 11 a.m. services on Sept 12. Registration forms can be downloaded here:
