“Work, Service, Calling”

Ryan Weeks, Worship Leader; Robert Nichols, Worship Associate
Introducing the theme of Vocation for the month of May, Ryan Weeks and Robert Nichols will be asking questions about the meaning of work in our daily lives. Is there a line between service and work? Are we defined by the work we do, as our culture suggests? What does it mean to find one’s true calling? Our very own Malena Boratgis will present Gershwin’s famous Three Preludes for piano solo.

“The Mother Person”

Rev. Lydia Ferrante-Roseberry, preaching; Robert Nichols, worship associate
Mother Nature, Working Mother, Stay-at-home Mother, Step-mother, Fairy Godmother, Helicopter mother. Today we explore the various images of “mother” we find in our culture, through the lens of media and fairy tales. How have they changed? What’s helpful? What’s not? Marlys Brinkman will join us with her band, The Everhopefulls.

“The Energizing Spirit”

Katie Covey, DRE and Kathy Partridge, BVUUF president, worship leaders; Matt Marshall, worship associate
9 a.m. Eighth Grade Coming of Age Ceremony | 11 a.m. Twelfth Grade Bridging Ceremony

“Nothing is secure but life, transitions, the energizing spirit.” Ralph Waldo Emerson gives us the title for our May 20 services. At the first service, we honor the work of the 8th Grade Coming of Age participants as they complete their year-long program. Join us to contemplate our faith together, as we deepen the ties within the congregation.

At the second service, we will honor our six graduating seniors with a bridging ceremony, bridging them to young adulthood as they move into the next phase of their lives. We will reflect on the transitions in our own lives, and offer our support and energizing spirits to them. The Fellowship Singers will present their final offering of the season.

“Religiously Liberal and Deployed—Creating Common Ground”

Rev. Lydia Ferrante-Roseberry and Retired Marine, Greg Rouillard, speaking; Chet Chavez, worship associate
Today we invite Retired Major Greg Rouillard to explore with us the complex arena of being religiously liberal and a member of our Armed Services. Greg was a lay leader in the Bull Run Unitarian Congregation in VA while he was deployed in Iraq, and began the “UUs in the Military” blog. Today, he’s a graduate student at Naropa University. Today’s music will feature baritone soloist Ryan Weeks.
