Music, whether vocal or instrumental, is integral to the life of the Fellowship. We make music together every week, whether congregational singing, choir performance or special music or guest musicians. Music for the services is carefully chosen to enhance the month’s theme through the collaboration of the Minister and Music Director. We believe in offering a high quality of musicianship, drawing on the talents of our membership as well as professional guest musicians from the region. Guest performers have included classical musicians, folk and bluegrass performers, world music ensembles, and more, in order to create diverse, expressive, and entertaining programming.
Utilizing the talents in our midst is part of how we create both an integrated worship experience and a stronger community. There are many opportunities for members and friends to contribute to the music of the Fellowship:
The Fellowship Choir (known as the Fellowship Singers) sings at Sunday services once a month. New singers are always welcome anytime during our August-May season, and no auditions are necessary. Time is devoted to developing our skills and musicianship during rehearsals. Whether you are new or experienced at choral singing, if you have a desire to make music with us, to experience the depth of community that comes from making music together, to sing a variety of musical styles, and to keep learning, you are most welcome. Adults and youth from age 12 up comprise the Fellowship Singers. Rehearsals: Mondays at 7- 8:30 p.m.
One Voice is a small women’s vocal ensemble, singing in services several times per year. We enjoy the challenges of close harmony and a capella as well as many other musical styles. Members learn music quickly by reading or by ear, sing one to three on a part, and work together to develop a high level of collective musicianship. Our current director is Deborah Mensch. By invitation or audition only. Rehearsals: Mondays at 6 p.m.
Our Youth Choir involves kids ages 5-15, celebrating the UU tradition of thoughtful, spiritual music, and often including music from Broadway or pop genres as well. Through this group, singers learn healthy vocal techniques, basic music reading skills, and harmonizing. We sing three times per year, and our current director is Clara Kelley. Rehearsals: Sundays 10:00-10:30 a.m. in the Alcott Room.
Our Intergenerational Choir sings once a year at one of the early Christmas Eve services, and singers include adults and youth of all ages. For low commitment and high fun, join us in rehearsing from Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve. Our current director is Clara Kelley. Rehearsals: Sundays 10:00-10:30 a.m. in the Alcott Room.
The Music Committee is comprised of choir members, the Music Director, and others interested in the BVUUF music program. It supports all aspects of the music program including assistance with: hiring and supporting music staff; planning for musical outreach within and beyond the congregation; fundraising for quality instruments like our beautiful grand piano; and visioning for the future of our congregation as a music-making and music-loving community.
For more information about special music during services, view the BVUUF Calendar page or This Month’s Services.
