November Update from the Board

The BVUUF Board of Officers and Trustees met twice in November.  At a special meeting on November 13, Board members discussed projected openings on next year’s Board.  Openings will include Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and three Trustees. Board members identified potential candidates for these positions in line with procedures established by the Leadership Development Council (LDC).  No motions were made or votes taken at the meeting.

At its regular meeting on November 21, the Board took the following actions, all of which were approved unanimously:  

  • Approved a Board goal for the 2019/2020 year that aims to Draw Our Circle Wider.  The goal states that we will engage in an on-going examination of how we can be more fully inclusive, and find ways to counter conscious and unconscious practices of the dominant culture (white supremacy culture, sexism, hetero-sexism, trans-phobia, etc). The goal also lists specific actions the Board will take to reach this goal.  
  • Agreed to pay rental and other expenses for a January 11, 2020, Leadership Visioning Retreat and the congregation’s Annual Meeting with funds budgeted, but not needed, for our staff health care benefits program. The visioning retreat is a new annual event that will help BVUUF shift to mission-based budgeting.  At the retreat, congregational leaders will identify their goals for the coming Fellowship year. That information will then be used to build the next year’s budget.  
  • Agreed to deposit $1,000 that BVUUF will receive from the UUA Wake Now My Vision Legacy Challenge into the BVUUF Legacy Fund. These funds represent 10% of the amount that BVUUF members earmarked for the UUA in estate plans during the time of the Legacy Challenge.  Thanks to all who for made these gifts!
  • Authorized the expenditure of up to $12,000 to hire a temporary, part-time communications consultant from January – June 2020 and to pay expenses for the building dedication, publicity events, and related projects.  The aim is to have the communications consultant help re-introduce the Fellowship to the community as we move into and begin using our remodeled building.  Funds will be taken from BVUUF’s Stoner Fund, which was established, in part, for outreach to the community.
  • Approved an application by the Immigration Justice Task Force to solicit funds from the congregation to provide dual-language books for immigrant preschool students at Columbine Elementary in Boulder. The Board set certain stipulations to assure that the collected funds are appropriately tracked, accounted for, and identified as charitable contributions for tax purposes.  The Board also stipulated that BVUUF congregants’ contributions for the books be acknowledged.
