Defund Fear: Safety Without Policing, Prisons, and Punishment by Zach Norris is the UUA’s Common Read for this year.  Our Adult Education Team will hold three book discussions on April 11, 18 and 25, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm on Zoom. Each date will cover about 50 to 60 pages of the book.

This book presents a groundbreaking new vision for public safety that overturns more than 200 years of fear-based discrimination, othering, and punishment. The 2021-2022 UUA Common Read (at uua.org/read) is a blueprint of how to hold people accountable while still holding them in community. Norris focuses on a public health model of preventive programs, restorative justice, universal health care, universal child benefit payments, closing all youth prisons and replacing them with non-punitive community safety centers, etc.
